So who is ‘real’? Father Christmas or God?

So we have another one of these daft ‘vicar tells children Father Christmas is not real and parents get very upset stories’: this one, in St Mary’s in Norfolk. You can read the news report online, but here’s what one of the parents had to say:

…my child will not attend any more church services again, she would not like it if we said there was no ‘God’

Oh dear.

If you tell my child that our Father Christmas is not real, I will tell my child that your God is not real.

Of course vicars, pastors, youth workers and the rest should show some wisdom – you can talk about the real story of the nativity without feeling the need to debunk the Father Christmas bits; but is this the level that some of the national discourse has reached with regard to God?
